Basic Scuba Equipment: Dive Fins

One of the first things to invest in when beginning your personal stock of scuba equipment is dive fins. These, along with a snorkel and mask, are inexpensive compared to the other high end equipment, like regulators and wetsuits, which can be purchased later on. When shopping for a pair of fins, you will encounter a variety of types and technology, ranging from basic to models with all kinds of features. Some of these variables include full-foot models, heel strap, split, force, and paddle fins. If you are searching for cheap scuba gear, then the traditional paddle fins are usually the least expensive. We also offer great discounts on name brands like Tusa, EDGE, Cressi, and Mares fins .

Dive Fins For Scuba Versus Snorkeling

Dive fins provide the necessary propulsion to move you more easily in the water and free up your hands for other activities when you’re diving. If you’re having trouble sifting through some of the variations of dive fins out there, read our handy guide so you can make an appropriate choice.

Dive fins come in two basic types – the full foot fins and  the open heel fins.
  • Full foot fins or shoe fins, like the Aeris Velocity Full Foot Fins, are for use with bare feet and work well if you plan on doing some snorkeling in tropical climates.
  • Open heel fins, like the Aeris Velocity Open Heel Fins, can be worn with foot coverings called boots. Generally, you would use open heel fins for scuba diving.
  • Open heel fins tend to be larger and stiffer than the shoe fins, thus work better for scuba diving.
  • Full foot fins intended for snorkeling tend to be smaller in size and inadequate for supplying the push you need for scuba diving.
