Basic Scuba Equipment: The Dive Mask

One of the first things to invest in when beginning your personal stock of scuba equipment is a dive mask. Masks give you clear vision underwater, protects your face and eyes from irritants in the water, keeps water out of your nose and gives you some protection from cold water like the Pure Vision Mares Masks. Goggles should never be used for snorkeling and/or scuba diving because there is no way to equalize the air pressure around your eyes when you descend. Also, goggles are not made of the necessary materials for dealing with pressure underwater. If you wear glasses or contacts, you should have prescription lenses made for your mask for example the X Vision Mares masks is a perfect mask for prescription lense

Defogging Your Dive Mask
As the window to your underwater world, you’ll want to make sure that your dive mask allows you a clear view underwater. Whenever you purchase a new mask, you’ll find a film of oil on the surface which occurs during the production of the dive mask. You’ll need to remove this film completely. Otherwise, you’ll always be faced with the problem of a fogging mask underwater.

One way to remove the film is through the use of  dish detergent. Your diving mask should be made of a tempered glass which will not scratch.

Another solution to defogging your dive mask is through the use of a commercial cleaner, like Sea Buff. Sea Buff is ideal for a new mask which needs the oil removed. You can then follow-up the process periodically with an anti-fog gel, such as Sea Gold.
