Atomic Frameless Mask Medium Clear Size: Medium
Atomic Frameless Mask Regular Clear Size: RegularThe Atomic Aquatics Frameless Mask is focused on fit, comfort and a wide vision field. The large lens and close fitting skirt work in harmony to create perhaps the widest viewing angle of any frameless mask design. The lens shape was computer designed to maximize upward, downward and side to side vision. Because an external frame is not needed, the viewable area of the lens is optimized. Squeeze-to-adjust buckles are tucked behind the lens for a sleek hydrodynamic design.)
ULTRACLEAR Lenses
Both the Atomic Frameless and SubFrame models offer a new standard feature never seen or “seen through” before in a diving mask. We call them UltraClear lenses.
What makes UltraClear special? Did you ever notice that normal dive mask lenses have a green tint to the glass? To see this tint, put your existing mask up to a piece of white paper and see for yourself. The green tint you see is the result of iron impurities left over in lower quality “float” or window type glass. That green tint distorts true colors and blocks out some of the light that reaches the eye.
UltraClear is a new and exciting optical quality glass with exceptional clarity and high light transmission, with no color distortion. The exceptionally high light transmittance and lack of distortion in the UltraClear lens maximizes the light available for improved visual acuity, especially underwater in low light conditions.

I have tried several, smaller-framed masks, as the majority of regular ones are usually too wide and/or tall for me. It's kind of nuts how much variation there is out there, even within one brand's product lineup. Atomic masks are a prime example. While the fit of this Medium size Frameless is very similar to the 2-lens Subframe series in Medium (they should really rethink their sizing nomenclature), the fit is *way* different between this mask and the Medium Frameless 2, which you would think would make for a closer match than the aforementioned pairing. They make it sound as if the Frameless 2 just looks a little different and has softer silicone than Frameless v1, but it seemed like a totally different mask to me. Glad I found the former in a dive shop to try on, as the silicone skirt ended up running right through my eyebrows. So if you're trying to decide between the two like I was, do try to test fit them in person before purchasing. That's always the best option, but I've yet to encounter a dive shop that stocks both variants in Medium fit.

<br>After another diver let me try on their frameless Medium, I bought one from Divers Supply as Open Box. It's awesome that they offer open box and used gear for sale, as the value is hard to beat. The mask came in a low profile, mask-shaped box which makes the whole thing look higher-end, but tbh I prefer the standard pop-top boxes. You do have to fight the strap a bit and bunch it up to fit in the case, which I'd rather not have to do. The visibility of the large single lens is top-tier, comparable to the Hollis M-1, if not a smidge better in field of view and clarity (the Hollis mask is a decent substitute for this mask in terms of fit, but its silicone skirt fits just a tiny bit larger). The nose pocket on the Frameless is a slight improvement over the Subframe, which I found difficult to equalize with; external material makes it difficult to grab your nose on that one. Still a little bit of that issue on the Frameless here, but it's definitely an improvement. Hollis M-1 has them both beat in that area and the matte finished silicone feels softer and more premium as well. I like both masks, but the Frameless does fit my face just a *little* better, and fit usually wins out. The only other mask that fits me better is the Tusa Kleio II, but quality-wise it's not quite on the same level as the Atomic or Hollis. The lens isn't as clear and the field of view is significantly limited by comparison. If I could take the skirt fit from the Kleio II, the lens of the Atomic, and the nose pocket and silicone finish of the Hollis, I would have the perfect mask, but for now I think I'll keep all 3.
