If your valve is stamped with 2400 psi, you actually have a 2400 psi-rated valve, not the 3442 psi version.XS Scuba manufactures its standard PRO and Thermo PRO valves with the same physical body style and 3/4"-14 { NPSM} neck threads, but they release them in four completely distinct service pressure ratings:
2400 psi (Typically used for low-pressure steel tanks)
3000 psi (Standard aluminum tanks)
3300 psi (Slightly older compact or specialty tanks)
3442 psi (High-pressure steel tanks).
Because they all look nearly identical from the outside, it is incredibly easy to mix them up. Here is why the distinction matters and what likely happened:
The Real Difference: The Burst Disc. While the heavy brass valve body can technically handle higher pressures, the internal safety mechanism cannot. The core reason that Valve is strictly a 2400 psi valve is its burst disc assembly. A burst disc is a thin copper safety plug hidden inside the back of the valve body. It is designed to rupture and safely vent the air if a tank is dangerously overfilled or exposed to extreme heat.
A 2400 psi valve contains a burst disc rated to pop at roughly 3750 to 4000 psi (based on Department of Transportation regulations, which require the disc to burst at 1.5 imes to 1.67 imes the service pressure).
A 3442 psi valve requires a much tougher burst disc rated for roughly 5250 psi.
?? Critical Safety Warning: If you put a 2400 psi valve on a high-pressure 3442 psi tank and attempt to fill it, the burst disc will rupture mid-fill as the pressure approaches 3700–4000 psi. It results in a massive, deafening, and highly dangerous release of high-pressure air.
How to Check Your Setup. Look at your tank: Check the metal crown stamps on the cylinder itself. If it says 3442, you have a high-pressure tank. Look at the SKU: XS Scuba / Thermo assigns different part numbers. The 2400 psi version is typically under the SKU VA200-24N, whereas the 3442 psi model is VX200-34N (or VA200-34N).
