Because the Trident 2 oz Silicone Lube (SKU: TRI-LP20) is a 100% pure silicone grease used for scuba O-rings, camera seals, and regulator maintenance, it is incredibly stable and does not have a strict or rapid expiration date once opened. Unlike water-based or organic substances, pure silicone grease doesn't support bacterial growth and doesn't evaporate. Once opened, its usable life is generally 2 to 5 years, but it can practically last much longer if you follow proper care.
Instead of a hard date, its expiration is determined by how it is stored and handled:
1. The "Finger" Rule (Contamination)The biggest threat to an opened tub of silicone grease is contamination from your hands. Digging into the jar with dirty or salty fingers introduces dirt, grit, and moisture. Over time, this breaks down the purity of the lube.
Pro-Tip: Always use a clean cotton swab (Q-tip) or a clean tool to scoop the grease out rather than your bare fingers.
2. Storage Environment: Silicone handles heat well, but constant exposure to extreme temperature swings (like leaving it in a hot dive bag in the trunk of a car or out in the direct sun) will accelerate oil separation.
If you store it in a cool, dry place with the lid tightly sealed, it will stay good for years.
How to Tell If It Has Gone Bad. Before applying it to an expensive O-ring or camera seal, do a quick visual check. It’s time to toss it and get a fresh jar if you notice:
Excessive Separation: A tiny layer of oily sheen on top is normal and can just be stirred back in, but if it has separated into a watery liquid and a hard, chunky paste, it's done. Grit or Discoloration: If it looks cloudy, yellowed, or has visible specks of dirt and dust in it.
Texture Changes: If it loses its smooth, thick, slippery consistency and becomes overly tacky, gummy, or stringy. If it looks clear, feels smooth, and has been kept sealed in a standard gearbox, it's perfectly safe to keep using!
